Pick-Up Lines

I'm currently teaching through the life of Solomon and while preparing to teach 'Song of Solomon' I was re-amused by some of the romantic lingo. But then I got to thinking, those lines worked! I mean, let's face it, Solomon had like a thousand girls! I just want one, so I'm going to start using lines like these:

Solomon's Top 5 Pick-Up Lines
  1. I liken you, my darling, to a mare (1:9)
  2. Your hair is like a flock of goats (4:1, 6:5)
  3. Thy temples are like a piece of a pomegranate (4:3, 6:7)
  4. Your waist is a mound of wheat (7:2)
  5. Your nose is like the tower of Lebanon (7:4)

Gilmore Girls

It's time for another season of the Gilmore Girls! I am, unapologetically, a big fan. I know a lot of other BBC bloggers like this show, so this is a reminder AND a place to put your comments after the 1st episode.

Jury Duty

I was scheduled for jury duty the week of Family Camp (the one week I really can't do jury duty), so I got out of it. I was re-scheduled for jury duty this week and was almost looking forward to it. But alas, the trial was adjourned and now I won't be called on for at least 8 years.

Have any of you actually been selected to be on a jury?

Servants of God

*The following is a fictional dialogue
from "Disciple" by Juan Carlos Ortiz

I want this pearl. How much is it?
Well, it's very expensive
But how much?
Well, a very large amount
Do you think I could buy it?
Oh, of course. Everyone can buy it
But didn't you say it was expensive?
Yes
Well, how much is it?
Everything you have
All right, I'll buy it
Well, what do you have? Let's write it down
Well, I have $10,000 in the bank
Good. $10,000. What else?
That's all. That's all I have.
Nothing more?
Well, I have a few dollars here in my pocket
How much?
Well, let's see..30..40..60..80..100...$120
That's fine. What else do you have?
Well nothing. That's all.
Where do you live?
In my house. Yes, I have a house.
The house too then
You mean I have to live in my camper?
You have a camper? That too. What else?
I'll have to sleep in my car!
You have a car?
Two of them
Both become mine, both cars. What else?
What more do you want!?!?
Are you alone in this world?
No, I have a wife and two children
Oh yes, your wife and children too. What else?
I have nothing left! I am left alone now
Oh, I almost forgot. You yourself too! Everything becomes mine- wife, children, house, money, cars, and you too. Now listen- I will allow you to use all these things for the time being. But don't forget that they are mine, just as you are. And whenever I need any of them you must give them up, because I am the owner.

Robson Church Signs

I saw an advertisement on the back of a Christian magazine that made me giggle. It contained the following quote and picture from a satisfied pastor whose church grew from 200 to 800 people. "To date, we're up over 300 percent. The Robson sign by far is the number one reason."

Favorite 5

I'm currently teaching through the Life of Solomon. Instead of teaching through the entire book of Proverbs (we did that about 2 years ago), I asked people to share their favorite Proverbs. And then I, using pastor's privilege, shared my top 10. But because blog readers like abbreviations of abbreviations, I'll just post my favorite five:

They would have none of my counsel
and despised my every rebuke.
Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their own way,
and be filled to the full with their own fancies

In the multitude of words sin is not lacking,
but he who restrains his lips is wise.

Do not let your heart envy sinners,
but be zealous for the fear of the LORD all the day;
For surely there is a hereafter,
and your hope will not be cut off.

If you say, “Surely we did not know this,”
Does not He who weighs the hearts consider it?
He who keeps your soul, does He not know it?
And will He not render to each man according to his deeds?

A fool vents all his feelings, but a wise man holds them back

What's your favorite Proverb?

Trinity Illustration

Illustrations can't walk on all fours. They are limited, but they can also be helpful. Over the years I've heard many people attempt to illustrate the concept of the Trinity. From triangles to H20, each illustration is worthy of consideration.

I heard one tonight (though I've heard it before) on The Narrow Path that I like. It illustrates the Trinity using the concept of sun/sunlight/heat. The Father, in the illustration, is the sun. The light rays come from the sun (and allow us to see the sun). Scripture says Jesus is the light of the world and the brightness of God's glory. He is Who allows us to see the Father. If we've seen the Son, we've seen the Father. The Spirit, then, is the heat that we feel from the sun. This heat can 'strangely warm' us or make us uncomfortable when need be.

What do you think? What illustrations do you find most helpful?

Pastoral Courting

Pastors are usually nice. In fact, pastors that aren't nice are usually fired. So, in a sense, pastors are paid to be nice. But once niceness goes beyond a certain degree, it should be interpreted as something different than niceness all-together. Otherwise, it would be impossible for a single pastor (like myself) to court anyone that knows they are a pastor. After all, I'm not THAT nice. So if you are a single girl, and you think the single guy that is your pastor is really really extra* nice, perhaps he's only the regular kind of nice. You know?

*If, however, he is extra nice to multiple girls, it might just be his regular level of niceness**
** Or, you could be in a polygamist denomination

Not Quite Blogworthy

I have a short list of things that aren't really worth blogging about, but only barely. So I'm going to combine them all into one post!

McDonalds food, which I usually avoid, should always be avoided *** A political campaign put 2 signs in front of our church, didn't even ask *** I promptly took them down, also without asking *** I'm currently teaching thru Luke, Titus & the Life of Solomon *** Tonight I sat by the lake in the rain for about an hour *** I'm more excited about upcoming hockey than current football *** I won week 1 of my family football pool *** I just got the best possible score (20) on the mini-golf game I posted about last week, now I can stop playing it

I'm Annoying

I'm one of those annoying people that can listen to the same song over and over. Saturday, for instance, on my way to and back from my friend's wedding, I must have listened to "Trapeze Swinger" by Iron and Wine about 15 times (including 4 times in a row near the PA border and 4 times just before I arrived back home)

Do you do this?
What do you do that's annoying?
What else do I do that you find annoying?

Should I Stand?

I think it's interesting that last year, on this very day, I wrote a post about Pledging allegiance to an earthly nation and tomorrow morning in our early service I'm supposed to be on the platform when we do just that. What do you think I should do? I'll read any suggestions that come in after I get back from a Saturday trip to PA for a wedding. 10 hours in a car alone. Thrilling!

Ryan Miller Signed

I think Sabres GM Darcy Regier did a fine job this summer keeping last year's best NHL team together to make another run at the Cup. Gone are Jay McKee, Mike Griere & JP Dumont, but they will be adequately replaced by Jaro Spacek, Danny Paille & Jason Pominville. Regier used almost the entire salary cap (44 million) to accomplish this.

Maguire Moments

I love the movie Jerry Maguire. It's about a guy who tried to ignore his true feelings for a long time, but eventually they poured out onto paper in the form of a mission statement. It was a moment of crystal clarity worthy of risk. It seemed so right that it didn't need to be thought through. But things didn't go very well. The mission statement got him fired & dumped and left him broke & broken. How could something that seemed so good produce results that seemed so bad?

I feel like Jerry Maguire lately. I feel like a guy that tried to ignore certain feelings for a long time, but then poured them out. It was a moment of crystal clarity and certainly worthy of risk. It definitely seemed like the right thing to do and the right time to do it, and yet the early results aren't as idealistic as anticipated. I feel like I'm on the edge of disappointment. Why didn't I think this through a little better?

Now, I could be optimistic and think about the ending of Jerry Maguire. He took the risk. Things got really bad. But then things got better. And his initial moment of clarity was vindicated. Or I could be pessimistic and say, 'that's a movie you stupid idiot. You won't have a happy ending.' More likely I'll be realistic and say to myself 'shutup you drama queen, things aren't bad at all, just be patient and see what happens, and whatever happens isn't the end or the beginning of your world.'

Haha! I realize, now, why I don't usually blog stuff like this. It takes forever! I started typing this almost an hour ago. Goodness gracious. I am going to put Jerry Maguire in the DVD player and try to sleep.
