Gilmore Girls

It's time for another season of the Gilmore Girls! I am, unapologetically, a big fan. I know a lot of other BBC bloggers like this show, so this is a reminder AND a place to put your comments after the 1st episode.

YES! I AM SO EXCITED! I WILL TAPE IT IF I'M OUT OF THE HOUSE. I have been addicted to two shows in my life: 1) The West Wing [over now] and 2) Gilmore Girls. TV doesn't get ANY better than this. These are the two most witty and clever shows on television. And I saw a preview which eludes that Luke and Lorelei break up-- after SEVEN years. I don't know if my heart can take it. Seven years of something there and then bang, they break up?? I guess life can be like that, but still...I might have to write the producer.

What is Gilmore Girls?
Is that movie?
I have never seen it in Japan.

matthew said...

I never watched the West Wing Jo. I am upset by the preview you saw!

Maki, Gilmore Girls is a very funny TV show...but I think it is only popular in the USA :)

I DVR every episode of this show.. there is nothing better than the girls :) I missed most of last season because of work, but I'm looking forward to the season premiere anyway. :) Eventually my dvr-ing will pay off and I'll have all the episodes :)

Yep, it starts tonight at 8pm I believe. I have it DVR'd too in case I don't make it home on time.

Okay, so I am officially ticked off. First of all, I have never watched a soap opera, but I am imagining that tonight's episode was very akin to one. Secondly, the quality is gone. GONE! WHERE IS THE WITTY CLEVER POP CULTURE AND LITERARY REFERENCE-LACED DIALOGUE? And the humor? It's gone. It's all drama now. Are the writers catering to the undereducated crowd of America in order to appeal to more viewers? Probably. GRRRR. WHAT'S THE DEAL? DID THEY LOSE ALL OF THEIR ARTSY CREATIVE WRITERS AND WERE ONLY LEFT WITH THE PEOPLE WHO USED TO WORK FOR SOAPS?
Thirdly, Okay, so VERY DISSAPPOINTED IN LORELEI! VERY. I am not a character-basher when all is said and done, but her character knew better, and I am just disgusted with her. I think it was probably good that she ended up telling Luke in the last part of the episode, but we all know that this is gonna drag out for years and years until they heal from it.

AHHH! I AM SO ANGRY THAT THEY TURNED SUCH A FINE ARTISTIC MAGNUM OPUS INTO A STUPID DRAMATIC FICKLE frailty-thy-name-is-WOMAN SHOW. If we wanted to watch that, we could just view First Knight. Geez.

Jo, I could tell, as I watched tonight's episode, that you wouldn't like it. I specifically noticed the absence of pop & literary references.

In regards to the writers, I do believe their were some changes made. And as for Lorelei's characters, I agree. Very disappointing at the end of last season/beginning of this one.

But there are some reasons for optimism, I think

1. Since this was a season premier, i think i was anticipating a soap-opera-ish beginning. Especially since it's also the launch of a new network and they're trying to get new addicts. I'll attribute the lack of literary references to that fact.

2. The speed of the show was pretty much the same, which bodes well.

3. Lorelei did recover a bit by realizing she'd made a mistake.

Now...my own reaction

1. The episode wasn't very funny, but they had to set the wheels in motion for this season's plot, so i'll give them a pass on that issue.

2. I was mad when they had Lorelei sleep with chris at the end of last season. But I was glad, during the episode, that she doesn't seem interested in getting back with chris at all. Unfortunately, the preview made it look like chris will still be in the picture. I don't like chris :(

3. I also don't like Logan, so I am glad there was some trouble in paradise there at the end. I am definitely hoping Rory doesn't spend this season in London, since that takes the show away from the town.

My wish list
1. More April
2. Less Logan
3. More Paris
4. Less Chris
5. More Luke
6. Less Stubbornness
7. More small town
8. Less London
9. More humor
10. Less drama

I'm not sure she realized anything Matt. The previews for next week did not look promising. If she really realized the enormous gravity of her infidelity than she wouldn't go running back to Christopher immediately after the break up with Luke [as next week's preview alluded]. That is just fickle, weak, and wrong. If she had/has learned a lesson, she would/will steer clear of Christopher, and pine for Luke forever without getting close to Chris or any other man again hoping that Luke would some day forgive her. That is what she should do.

I suppose this was more of a shock for me because I had blocked out her infidelity from the end of last season. I simply forgot that it happened and that was the starting point of this season. Obviously, last season's ending was too tramatic for me to remember consciously. Here I had been looking forward all summer to this show in idealized fancy, when all the while i should have been dreading its return because of my deep disappointment.

Anyway, I suppose I should calm down, think about grace, quit worrying about poor Luke, and realize that my character ideals for TV characters are too high.

p.s. I totally agree with your wish list. And, I have NEVER liked Logan. Ever. All the other girls who have watched this show with me from time to time have given Logan a chance, have welcomed him in fact, but sorry, he's too much of a ladie's man.

matthew said...

Yes, the previews didn't look promising at all :( Hopefully they are just trying to fool us!

I definitely sympathize with Luke. I don't like being asked to make quick decisions about big issues. I think Lorelei was a bit unreasonable in her demands and, obviously, over-reacted when he didn't cave to her pressure

Logan stinks. He's too slick. I hope they don't last the season.

I hated Jess at first
Because I liked dean
But jess is 'ok'
Dean is my favorite

Luke has endeared himself to the entire audience I think. Nobody dislikes Luke.

I have a rotten intuition that Luke is gonna get burned even more before the season is out...

See, the writers have made him out to be the hero--the warrior poet, the savior--and what better way to unite all the other conflicting characters than to sacrifice or kill the poet that everyone loves? killing the savior-poet inspires the others to live life better. that's usually how they write the good novels. old school formula, i'm afraid...

da da da DA.

I was angry last night I almost threw the remote at the TV! How could Lorelai be so.. so... so... STUPID!?!?!? Does she really not realize that Luke is the best thing that could ever happen to her? I have always had a soft spot for Chris, being Rory's dad and all, but he's no Luke and he never will be. And oh the field day that Emily will have with this one... grr... As for Rory and Logan... I don't like Logan, but I don't think I like any of her options right now. I liked Dean better when Jess was around, but I lost all respect for Dean in the last few seasons. Jess seems to have improved a great deal, but I still don't think he's good for her. My favorite boy prospect for Rory was Marty... let's bring him back :)

matthew said...

Alison! You & I have almost identical views regarding this show. I totally agree with everything you commented.

Alison said...

One of my local radio stations played a clip most of this week of Lorelai telling Rory that she had slept with Chris, did that happen last night and I missed it? Or is that still to come?

matthew said...

That'll be next week, it wasn't in last nights episode

I am glad it was back on. I got to watch it later because i was out. I dont have time to go into details but here are a few short things.

1. They do have new writers. the old ones walked out.
2. I am glad she told Luke.
3. It was too late for Luke to say "lets go get married after he didn't do anything."
4. That was by far the most interesting stunt Kirk ever did and if he actually drove that through the set it would be fun!
5. the rocket?? Guys-if girls have to google it to find out what it means --it looses its effect.

i LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE gilmore girls!! most definitely my favourite show on tv! i taped the episode because i was at youth group and was yes, angry at certain events which unfolded between the finale and the premiere. here's my list: :)
1. i love marty (agreed alison)
2. i hate dean
3. i love luke
4. i hate chris
5. at times during last season the april plot was getting annoying simply because it was pushing lorelei and luke apart.
6. i am a bit nervous about the new writers. i had heard that the palledino's left and was worried it wouldn't be as witty or funny
7. i still have faith this season will get better (i hope!)
8. i am glad to find people as passionate about the show as i am!!
:) :) :)

i KNEW there was a lot of BBC GG fans

perhaps, for each new episode, i will post and we can collect our comments here :)

HEATHER
So you pretty much take Lorelei's side over Luke? That's interesting. I think she needs to have a better understanding of Luke's slow changing personality. She knows he loves her, but she just had to have it her way. Boo her.

And yeah, I was mad that Rory liked the rocket, eventually

AMY
I am very glad there are so many of us :) I agree with you on 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8!

But I liked Dean for the most part. And I only semi agree with you on 5 b/c i like April's character a lot, even though it caused problems

I must admit, I feel semi-left out! I tried watching Gilmore Girls once and couldn't stick with it...the drama of non-Christians just doesn't tend to intrigue me much anymore. It's kinda like watching a soap opera. In the end, I just have this ultimate knowing that their lives are only so dramatic and screwed up because they don't have Jesus. (Putting aside that it is television in the first place and not real life). I think I gravitate more towards shows that are less real-life dramatic like House, Standoff, etc. which don't really deal much with relational issues. Anyway, enjoy this season of GG! :)

matthew said...

please don't refer to GG as being like a soap opera. i'm feeling bad enough already being the only guy among 24 comments :)

Jo said...

another guy: Jon Hurd. He watches it. Oh, and his friend, Todd in Ohio, he used to watch it too. I think there are a lot of undercover men who watch GG. sorta like oprah viewers.

yeah, esquire magazine believes gilmore girls is the best show on tv FOR MEN

Of course no disrespect intended about the soap opera thing. :) Of course GG is not a soap opera...Susan Lucci's not in it!

Uh add my name I'm working through it as fast as my sister buys the seasons but I've watched the first two seasons now and am anticipating the third soon. Someday I will catch up to the rest of you. (Oh I buy Desperate Housewives myself, have seen all of Once and Again, and will be starting to watch Felicity when I get home)
