I agree with the second, I often use the more emo version, "Sticks and stones break my bones, and words destroy my soul"
Words are powerful, but they only have power over us when we give them power. If someone calls me stupid, it doesn't make me any stupider. Although, sometimes it makes me say stupider which is kinda stupid...

I agree with Coady that words are powerful and that we can respond powerfully to words.
I'd rather have my bones broken, than have my spirit broken.
