That was real. According to an old high school friend of mine, who was VERY (unfortunately) experienced in the drug scene, Pheonix was "high as a kite". I'm inclined to believe that there was some sort of behavioral disorder involved as well...but, it could be the result of the drugs, or it could be the result of his brother's recent traumatic murder, too. Who's to know? I just know that Letterman's responses had me laughing pretty hard...because if I had been in Letterman's shoes? I don't think, ok, I KNOW, I couldn't have just rolled with it like he did. Sad for Pheonix, though.
The jittering makes it look like he's "tweaking" (meth), except that I would think a person would be more talkative if they were on meth. But it could be marijuana. I have a student who's a pothead and he acts just like that, except for the fidgeting. :( Maybe it's a combo.

Totally agree with Kayla, the whole interview is awkward. Letterman handled well, so glad it wasn't me.
Told ya it was freaky and scary. How sad and what a waste of his talent.
