Chronicles of Narnia

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
I don't read fiction, but I do like C.S. Lewis. I don't like fantasy, but I have read 'The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe'. My interest in this movie, unlike those who grew up reading this series, was mostly pastoral. Could it be a tool?

My answer came before and after the movie. I think the lady behind me was a Sunday School teacher with two of her students. I listened to her connecting with them before the show started and discuss stuff with them on the way out. I also overheard 2 kids asking their father more about Aslan. Two thumbs up.

As for the movie itself, I enjoyed it. The kids did a great job and the special effects were not distracting at all. Very high quality. Narnia places the greatest story ever told in the world of wonder, imagination & awe... right where it should remain.

Rating: 8.8

Someone told me that trhey did not do a good job of showing the kids fear of Aslan. Would you agree?

They also said that while they did include the line "Aslan is not a tame lion, but he is good" from the book but that throughout the book, he really WAS a tame lion... Would you agree?

I haven't seen it, but I plan on seeing it soon.

I don't have a great memory of the book, so I can only tell you about the movie.

1. I don't think the kids were ever scared of Aslan in the movie.

2. That line occurs at the end of the movie. Aslan is not always 'gentle' in the movie. He is quite ferocious when it comes to the wicked. But He's always gentle in regards to those with Him.

hey sarah and matt:
i believe the famous line you are looking for is:

one kid: Is He [Aslan] safe?
animial: No. He is not safe. But, He's good.

Does the movie really not quote that? That's the best statement in all the books.

At the very end of the movie the reference is made. The wording is a little different.

Something like

Animal: he's not a tame lion
Girl: but he is good

It is one of the quotes i remember from the book, so i could tell it was different

ok maybe i'm crazy...but didn't it seem to you that mr. tumus was a text-book pedophile? "come and have tea with me little girl"...ok he's running around in the woods in winter time...no shirt..but a scarf...and a parasol...doesn't anybody else worry about that? lol

other than that i thought it was a pretty good movie.

I think that thought is normal considering the sad state of our society. Pedophilia is in the news a lot and makes us suspect even the most innocent of relationships.

He was, however, contemplating handing her over to the queen and, in those terms, his motives for 'tea' weren't exactly pure.

It's been awhile since I've read the books, but I BELIEVE the "tame/safe/good" quote is actually from a different book in the series, so even if they had left it out, I don't think they were out to get you Jo ;)

I think I will re-read the book before I go see the movie. That way it'll be fresh.

that's a good idea

I decided that i'll only do the fiction thing via audiobook though. Maybe i'll get the chronicles of narnia audiobook someday for my kids or something

Fiction reading is my favourite by far. Stretches the imagination. Forces you to picture for yourself what is going on. I prefer books over movies almost anyday.

Yes, I appreciate the value of fiction writing. I'm not sure why/when I stopped liking it. I like to imagine. But for the last 4 years I just find fiction reading boring. Maybe something else in my life replaced what fiction reading was providing.

OK, I am late to comment on here, but it' been busy this week. The 3rd-5th grade students at my school read the book, and then wrote a paper on it. They took a field trip on Tuesday to see the movie... and all the kids that were in my class last year (they are in fifth grade now) liked the movie, but they said "The book is soooo much better!" I love it when kids see that fact! I have not seen the movie yet, but being the CS Lewis fan that I am, I plan to see it soon!

That's great Gwyn :) I'm glad they read it first. Hope you enjoy the movie.
