Mission %

Elliott, Robin, AJ & Dena all seemed to agree that 10% is a good benchmark (minimum, place to start, guideline, etc). I agree. 10% or more is a good number. Out of curiousity, I checked the WNY District's annual conference journal to see what our 32 churches have been up to in this area. Here is my statistical report:

0-3.9% (6 churches)
4-7.9% (6 churches)
8-11.9% (12 churches)
12+% (8 churches)

Here are the the top 5 % givers: (clickable links)
1. Canaseraga- $16,878 (24.6%, 22nd in attendance)
2. Silver Creek- $15,187 (21.3%, 20th in attendance)
3. Houghton- $119,053 (14.8%, 3rd in attendance)
4. Hess Road- $31,830 (14.3%, 7th in attendance)
5. Hamburg- $585,156 (13.4%, 2nd in attendance)

The churches gave $1,421,542 (or 10.1%/church)

My Statistical Analysis:
  1. I was surprised that the average is over 10%
  2. I always assumed that small churches gave a higher %, but this is not true in my district. Of the 6 churches that gave less than 4%, all 6 average less than 95 people for their a.m. service
  3. Church size, in fact, has very little to do with the missions giving ratio.
  4. Every church that has a name beginning with the letter "H" is in the top 5 in missions giving :)

Any other stats you want me to look up?
Anyone know the stats for their church/district?

Thursday I'll post the breakdown of where the money is spent in the district and, specifically, in our churches missions budget. Tomorrow is Gilmore Girls Survivor Contest and Wednesday is the January BBC Blogger Awards.

*** My statistics are based on the combination of 5 line items in our annual journal (Wesleyan missions, non-wesleyan missions, world hope, local benevolences, native american ministries). Our journal does NOT have a line item for TOTAL missions giving, so I simply added up those 5 categories and divided by total income to reach the above percentages.

Knowing our numbers, our church gives about 10- 12% of their budget to missions. This is raised in faith promises, however about 90% of faith promises actually come in. We just completed our full year of missions giving of what we promised last year. I thought it was quite easy to give it over and beyond. Our Capital campaign however was much more taxing then the missions. However, with our capital campaign closed we actually raised 30,000 above our targeted $.

With all that said...God bless the missionaries. This whole money raising thing is rough. Especially when there are many missionaries out there and not that many wesleyan churches. Many are tapped out. If you wanted to get into our budget, you would have to have some sort of connection because we support so many already.

Our pastor says God blesses when you give to ministries that you never see the outcome or they never effect you. I agree with that and think it is necessary for us to give to missionaries to carry out what we might never see or do.

a couple of you have mentioned faith promises. Our church doesn't do that. Here, we budget, let's say, $30,000 toward missions. The following year it automatically goes up by $1000. And up again each year. We do not rely on individuals pledging and fulfilling their commitments. I am not saying it is good or bad, I'm just sharing that I'm a bit unfamiliar with the faith promise method
