You know when Christians pick the sin that they don't struggle with and then make others feel really condemned about it? Well, I'm going to do that now, ok? Having a cell phone is a serious sin and you should all feel guilty about it. They are stupid and they are ruining the world. So I am 'calling' for all cell phone users (and here comes the guilt-invoking part) to cancel their plans and sponsor a hungry child instead. The costs are about the same (the kids are about $30 a month) and the rewards are great. Not only do you get to not have a cell phone (!!!!!!), but you also get to invest in a child's life!
Tomorrow I will introduce the official child of The Matthew Never Knew

Great idea, Matt! There are tons of ways most of us could save enough money to sponsor at least one child and not even be making that much of a sacrifice. One could even sponsor, oh say, a missionary to Japan...
If I gave up my cell, I wouldn't have a phone. We don't have a landline -- just cells.
Also, I invest in children 50 hours a week so what is your excuse. We teachers get low pay for a lot of work and so that is our investment.
But way to promote sponsering childen. I think your point is well taken.
Can't get rid of mine either for the same reasons (no phone...no job, no connection to anyone from home!, etc), but I agree with Heather about promotion. Good job.
okay, this condemnation is for everyone who reads it and can't think up an excuse good enough to post :)
it counts as a sign of intelligence
i admit i'd be lost without my cell, it's really the only way people get ahold of me....especailly since i have no other phone
but I do have a sponsor child. He's from the democratic republic of Congo and his name is Andwe
I have a cell that I do not own or pay for and that I have no option of giving up... It is required by my job.
I'm liking Whitey's suggestion of putting that money towards missions. In my experience, many organizations that claim to "help" children through a sponsorship program simply send you a picture of a child in the community that they will use your money in and that child's family never actually sees a dime. I'd rather invest in someone that I already know and that I know will directly involve themselves in the lives of children and their parents wherever they work in the world. Seriously, have extra money??? HELP WHITEY!
good stuff
I like that a lot of you only have cells, no land-line. Also, supporting a missionary with extra money is great as well. Of course, along with Elliott, one should research what sponsor ministry you'll support before you support it.
I think i'll do a post soon about church missions budget's. That could be good.
btw...this post and these comments are a good example of how the condemning approach doesn't work all that well :)
