Wesleyan Church

I have family who is Wesleyan, and at the risk of making some here angry-I gotta say, it is VERY cult like in it's works based salvation. I don't know if all weslyans are like them-but most of their religion is defined by the way they look ie no hair cuts for women, no facial hair for men, no tv, long dresses for the women-with ugly shoes of course, and no jewelry of any kind except for a watch. They (at least the ones in my family) know nothing of God's love. I'd just stear clear.

the above is a copy of what a poster on a message board posted
after someone asked what the Wesleyan Church was all about

Wow...that is some antiquated ideology of the Wesleyan Church, and some of it being unfamiliar to me.

Hope that someone is able to clarify the Wesleyan position to this person...

Thanks for sharing.

yeah, it made me wonder if that person was secretly a time traveller or something, haha.

The discussion following her comment was actually pretty good. I'm the only 'wesleyan' involved, but many other posters who had visited wesleyan churches also spoke up to express surprise at her comments.

God bless

That sounds very Menonite to me...

yeah, from what i hear there are some pretty hip mennonite churches nowadays, but i'd think they are much closer to the posters description than modern day wesleyans in most areas

Dang it I told her if she said anything about our church I would have her tarred and feathered. She is in big trouble now.

This is a very old thread but I do have to tell you that some of this is familiar to me as a former Wesleyan. They are VERY dogmatic, take the Bible literally, very judgemental, very focused on the end days, very afraid of the outside world. Which to me sounds cultish. You aren't forbidden to wear makeup, jewelry, etc, but it is frowned upon to get your ears pierced, or wear short skirts. In my day you would NEVER wear jeans, shorts, or pants to church if you were a woman. Some women in the church don't even wear their wedding rings! You can't dance, listen to rock music, go to the movies or watch certain tv shows. (again, frowned on, not forbidden exactly). You cannot buy or sell on Sunday, or go fishing, swimming, etc. on the sabbath. You can't swear, even to say heck, gee (especially!), or darn, and especially not God! No premarital sex, birth control is frowned upon. They hate other religions, we were taught that Baptists especially were going to hell because of the "once saved always saved" thing. You go to church twice on Sunday, once on Wednesday, revival once a year, church camp once a year and vacation bible school in the summer.

Now as to the above posters stuff about the clothes - that is correct, it comes from the holy roller side of the religion, the holiness sect. I know this is a fact because my mother was raised in an orphanage in WV that was holiness and later merged with the Wesleyan Church. She could not cut her hair (when she left it was down to her ankles!) curl her hair, color her hair, no make up, skirts to her ankles, sleeves to her wrists. This church merged with the Wesleyans and that's where the nuttiness comes in.

All this being said, it is my understanding that today Wesleyans are more modern and tolerant, but for me the damage was already done. I wouldn't go to church now if you paid me.
